Return To My Native Land by Aimé Césaire translated by John Berger and Anya Bostock
In 1969, John and Anna translated Return To My Native Land by Aimé Césaire, originally published in french in 1939. Penguin proposed to publish this masterpiece of West-Indian author into its collection Modern Classic and, recommended by Aimé Césaire’s family, they entrusted Jason Allen-Paisant, scholar, award-winning poet and writer, to revisit their translation and to introduce “this poem [which] inspired movements of liberation and cultural assertion across Africa and its diaspora.”
