Centenary events in preparation

As you know, 2026 will be the 100th anniversary of John’s birth ! During this coming year, many events will take place to celebrate John Berger’s work and collaborations. Exhibitions, performances, lectures, screenings, theatre creations, publications and more are to be expected. From small alternative initiatives to bigger national institutions, the range of events will be large and will take place in many different countries across the world.

  • Lisbon (Portugal) 27-28th of MARCH — TeatroMOSCA staged Dog Art a theatrical adaptation of King (1999), as well as conferences, readings and screenings at AMAS – Auditório Municipal António Silva, in Cacém (Sintra, Lisbon’s district), as a tribute to the diversity and contemporary relevance of his legacy. With the participation of theater critic João Carneiro, translator Júlio Henriques, actress and director Teresa Coutinho and Teatromosca artistic director Pedro Alves, and with the projection of the documentary film The Seasons in Quincy (2016).   • London (UK) 14th of MAY — The British Film Institute proposes a screening “Ways of Seeing Archives” including Surrender: Ways of Hearing John Berger (2023) by Tina Grace and Tierney Walker. More info
  • New York (US) from 29th of JULY to 5th of AUGUST  — Film Comment Magazine presents a series, “Hold Everything Dear – John Berger and Cinema,” comprising 10 films that John Berger participated in, inspired, or was inspired by (including titles by Pier Paolo Pasolini, Timothy Neat, Robert Kramer, Alain Tanner, Mike Dibb, and others), as well as an illustrated lecture by Brett Story. More info 
  • Tokyo (Japan) 8th of AUGUST — Tokyo-based cultural translation agency BABELO will host a celebration of John Berger’s works, featuring screenings of The Seasons in Quincy (2016) at UPLINK. The event will include a dialogue between Sungwon Kim (BABELO) and Kei Wakabayashi (blkswn publishing house), the co-translators of A SEVENTH MAN, alongside other surprises. More info
  • London (UK) — The British Library organizes :
    From the 4th of AUGUST 2026 to 31st of JANUARY 2027, a display based on John Berger’s archives.
    Thursday 3rd of SEPTEMBER, Tom Overton will launch his John Berger’s biography FROM LIFE (Penguin 2026).
    Friday 23rd of OCTOBER, Katya, Jacob and Yves, John Berger’s children, present “DO YOU KNOW WHAT I WATCH?” a choral reading sniffing a few animal traces in John Berger’s work.
  • Hurigny (Bourgogne, France) 26th of AUGUST — Emmanuel Favre’s cultural festival La Manufacture d’idées will pay a tribute to John Berger, including “DO YOU KNOW WHAT I WATCH?” choral reading. More info
  • Basel (Switzerland) from 12th of SEPTEMBER to 31st of OCTOBER — Villa Renata will propose “GO CLOSER – John Berger Through his Art”, a large exhibition of John’s drawings and paintings.
  • London (UK) Cockpit Theatre, Marylebone, 4th of OCTOBER — The Shape Of a Pocket event « Passing the Berger baton » is organised by Jan Woolf every year. In collaboration with Michael Hrebeniak and Rhona Eve Clews from the New School of the Anthropocene (NSOTA), this edition will be dedicated to “Ways of Seeing: Climate Crisis”. More info soon
  • Norwich (UK) — John Christie will propose :
    from 17th of OCTOBER to 21st of NOVEMBER, a celebratory exhibition (including a selection of John Berger’s drawings).
    Saturday 24th of OCTOBER, a series of events in progress, including “DO YOU KNOW WHAT I WATCH?” choral reading.
  • Meyrin (Switzerland) from 30th of OCTOBER 2026 to 14th of FEBRUARY 2027 — The Mémoires de Meyrin association will inaugurate an apartment-museum, their new space in the “Cité de Meyrin-Parc”. It will display an exhibition around John and Anya Berger’s apartment in Meyrin. 
  • Lausanne (Switzerland) from 31 of OCTOBER to 8th of NOVEMBER — Théâtre Vidy proposes a rich program of talks, readings, screenings, exhibition… around “QUESTIONS FOR JOHN” a stage creation by Simon McBurney and Theatre Complicité. More Info

  • Barcelona (Spain) in autumn, dates to be confirmed — Arts Libris, the International Fair for Artists’ Books, will dedicate its 2026 edition to John Berger. 
  • Paris (France) From 13th to 22th of NOVEMBER — Forum des Images prepares a week of conferences (with Frédéric Ogée, Alice Leroy, Emmanuel Favre…) and projections of John Berger’s cinema collaborations.
  • Istanbul (Turkey) 28th of NOVEMBER — Metis, main John Berger’s turkish publisher, prepares a commemorative event, including “DO YOU KNOW WHAT I WATCH?” choral reading.
  • London (UK) dates to be confirmed — Nirmal Puwar, Amarjit Chandan and Panjabi Women collaborate to propose a sung tribute.
  • Hackney (London, UK) dates to be confirmed — Engagement, Culture and Development Team will propose a programme at Dalston CLR James Library, including a panel event in May and a film screening.
  • Events in the Alps are also in preparation. Among others, association “Rencontres en poèmes” with the musical partner “Horizons vagabonds” proposes a poetry recital , they perform in Mieussy, Grenoble, Pont de Claix, Mont-Saxonnex… More info

Comme vous le savez, 2026 sera le centenaire de la naissance de John Berger ! Lors de cette année à venir, plusieurs événements auront lieu pour célébrer l’œuvre et les collaborations de John Berger. Expositions, performances, lectures, projections, créations théâtrales, publications et d’autres encore sont attendues. Des petites initiatives de milieux indépendants aux plus importantes institutions nationales, il y aura une grande diversité d’événements dans plusieurs pays à travers le monde.

JOHN BERGER

Storyteller, essayist, novelist, screenwriter, playwright, painter and critic, John Berger (1926-2017) is one of the most internationally influential writers of the last fifty years. Solo or in collaboration with Jean Mohr for example, he published more than 30 titles, the Booker Prize winning novel G and the best-seller Ways of Seeing. He has also published articles in the most important newspapers around the world.

He used to work and live in Quincy, a small French peasant community, the setting for his trilogy Into their Labours.

Painters, cineasts, writers, dancers, curators have been and are still inspired by his work, this website is a window on these TODAY creations.
