Centenary publications in preparation

Across the world, many publishers are preparing launchings for various titles, for John Berger’s centenary in 2026. We can already announce the following upcoming publications:
  • TO TELL A STORY, a transcription of dialogues between Susan Sontag and John Berger, edited by Benoît Bourreau. Published by Canongate in English, also in Turkish by Metis, in Italian by Il Saggiatore, in Russian by Ad Marginem, in Portuguese, both by Fosforo in Brazil and by Relogio d’Agua in Portugal, in Korean by Youlhwadang and in Spanish by GG.
  • An original collection of John Berger and Katya Berger Andreadakis’ TITIAN: NYMPH AND SHEPHERD (1996), MANTEGNA: LYING DOWN TO SLEEP (2010) and a yet unpublished IMPRINTS (2014) about four paintings, will be released in Chinese, published by Beijing Yutian Hanfeng Books.
  • Already published in Spanish but for the first time in English, FOUR HORIZONS a dialogue between John Berger, Sr. Lucia Kuppens, Sr. Telchilde Hinckley and John Christie, around their visit to Le Corbusier’s Pilgrimage Chapel at Ronchamp, will be published by Objectif.
  • For the first time in French, BERGER ON DRAWING, edited in 2005 by Jim Savage, will be published by L’Atelier Contemporain.
  • We are also glad to begin a new collaboration with American publisher The New York Review of Books. Starting in 2026, they will publish G (1972), AND OUR FACES, MY HEART, BRIEF AS PHOTOS (1984), ABOUT LOOKING (1980) and THE SUCCESS AND FAILURE OF PICASSO (1965), followed in 2027 by the trilogy INTO THEIR LABOURS (1979-1990). More information on the John Berger page on NYRB website.
  • In the UK, we pursue our collaboration with Verso, who have already republished 6 titles including some out-of-print like ART AND REVOLUTION (1969) . Forthcoming this spring CORKER’S FREEDOM (1964), THE MOMENT OF CUBISM (1969) and, for the first time within a same volume, two plays written by Nella Bielski and John Berger : A QUESTION OF GEOGRAPHY (1987) and GOYA’S LAST PORTRAIT (1989). For the autumn 2026, they will publish : THE SENSE OF SIGHT (1985), A PAINTER OF OUR TIME (1958), KEEPING A RENDEZVOUS (1992) and LANDSCAPES (2016).   • In his collection Desdoble, the Mexican publisher Antílope will reunite in Spanish « Drawn to that Moment » from THE SENSE OF SIGHT (1985) and « Mother » from KEEPING A RENDEZ-VOUS (1991).
  • John Berger’s Korean publisher Youlhwadang is preparing a new anthology with different essays.


Beside John’s writings, several authors write about John’s work, we expect these publications for 2026 :
  • John Berger’s biography by Tom Overton, published by Penguin. Tom met John and Beverly to organize John’s archives donation to the British Library. He then edited these three books of John’s essays: Portraits (2015), Landscapes (2016) and The Underground Sea (2024). Besides, Tom worked on this long and very complete bio for more than 10 years.
  • Understanding John Berger: Birth Centenary Tribute, with texts by writers, artists and art critics of the Indian sub-continent, edited by Amarjit Chandan and published by Copper Coin.
  • Geography with John Berger – Questions of space and practice edited by Ben Garlick & Dubravka Sekulić with many contributors including a geo-biography by Tom Overton, published by Bloomsbury.
  • Mientras Quede Una Rosa – Caminar junto a John Berger en una cordara written by Javier Morales who interviewed many Iberian artists connected to John such as Marisa Camino, Manuel Rivas, Joaquín Araújo, Leticia Ruifernández… published by Cuatro Lunas.


Several John’s titles will be published for the first time in different languages:
  • The first translation of WAYS OF SEEING (1972) into Armenian will be published by Focus Art NGO. Thus John’s work will from now be translated into 50 languages !
  • G (1972) for the first time in Hindi by Rajkamal, in Ukrainian by Osnovy and in portuguese with the Portuguese publisher Relogio d’Agua.
  • THE RED TENDA OF BOLOGNA (2007) for the first time in Portuguese by the Brazilian publisher Editora 34.
  • TO THE WEDDING (1995) for the first time in Bulgarian by List.
  • WHY LOOK AT ANIMALS? (2009) for the first time in Greek by Octana.
  • PORTRAITS (2015) for the first time in Romanian by Trei.
  • HERE IS WHERE WE MEET (2005) for the first time in Russian by Ad Marginem.
  • A SEVENTH MAN (with Jean Mohr 1975) for the first time in Basque by Katakrak.
  • KING (1999) and OVER TO YOU (with Yves Berger 2019) for the first time in complexe chinese by Rye Field.

JOHN BERGER

Storyteller, essayist, novelist, screenwriter, playwright, painter and critic, John Berger (1926-2017) is one of the most internationally influential writers of the last fifty years. Solo or in collaboration with Jean Mohr for example, he published more than 30 titles, the Booker Prize winning novel G and the best-seller Ways of Seeing. He has also published articles in the most important newspapers around the world.

He used to work and live in Quincy, a small French peasant community, the setting for his trilogy Into their Labours.

Painters, cineasts, writers, dancers, curators have been and are still inspired by his work, this website is a window on these TODAY creations.
